Gender
and Climate Change: Tanzania National Strategy on Gender and Climate Change
(2013)
The overall objective of the Strategy is :to
enable Tanzania to mainstream gender consideration into policies, programs, and
strategies related to climate change so that both men and women have access to,
participate in, contribute to, and hence
benefit from climate change initiatives and efforts taking into account the
diverse needs roles and contribution of
both men and women in sustainable development

The
strategy identifies six priority sectors for intervention: agriculture, water,
health, forests/REDD and Integrated Coast Management. In agriculture the
strategy aims at improving efficiency of water storage systems through
construction of dams in which are controlled by women. In water the strategy is
to empower women in urban and rural areas to harvest water for domestic use in
places where water is contaminated, expensive or not accessible.

In health the strategy is to
strengthen/maintain links between women groups and health offices to share
information on diseases as well as curative measures. In Forests/REDD+ the
strategy is to identify benefit sharing schemes within and outside Tanzania and
establish best practices.
Lastly, in Integrated Coastal Management, the
strategy is to prioritize in provision of loans and credits for accessing
appropriate technology with emphasis in seaweed farming, fishing and
aquaculture.
The implementation of the strategy is guide by
A Gender Mainstreaming Guidelines which is a guidebook to assist sector
ministries to mainstream gender in their respective actions on climate change (www.mcdgc,go.tz/data/cca-guidelines)
